Attention data is an important and interesting signal. Platforms (e.g., Twitter, Google Scholar, Goodreads, Altmetrics) harvest large amounts of attention data, using it to drive content search and recommendation (CSR). However, this attention data remains mostly locked and inaccessible to the public.

We propose to develop Open Source Attention, a protocol for open-access management and publishing of reading histories. Reading histories are a simple yet important type of shared attention, representing content that an individual (or a group) has read or interacted with. For example, consider the use case of a junior researcher, using the system to get glimpses into the headspace of leading researchers; an entrepreneur, looking into cutting-edge developments in tech; or a journalist, looking for emerging trends.
